How to clean your rusty BBQ grill (step by step guide)

BBQ grills left outside with no cover can get rusted quickly if not cleaned properly. In this blog, we will show our 3 quick steps to cleaning a rusty BBQ grill in less than 30 minutes, to get it ready for the next family’s gathering or hosting guests outdoors!


Step 1 – get the cleaning tools ready!

You will need to get the following cleaning tools and ingredients ready for an effective cleaning experience. Most of these cleaning ingredients are already in the house such as:


1. Cleaning gloves

2. Dishwashing cleaning liquid

3. Water and a bucket

4. Dishwashing sponge for stainless steel pots

5. Stainless steel cleaner & polish (spray can)

6. BBQ grill metal brush

Step 2 – Apply the stainless-steel cleaner & polish to the outside of the grill


1. Spray the stainless-steel cleaner & polish to the outside of the grill, make sure to thoroughly cover all stainless-steel parts of the grill.

2. Leave for 10 minutes

3. Using a dishwasher sponge, gently rub and clean any rust still visible

4. Use a dry piece of cloth to wipe away any residual left

Step 3 – Scrub clean the inside of the BBQ grill with water and dishwashing solution

1. Using a BBQ grill metal brush, scrub the inside of the grill with using the dishwashing and water solution.

2. Rinse with clean water and leave to dry.

Additional tips!


1. For safety, please disconnect the gas bottle from the BBQ grill and store in a safe place before undergoing the cleaning process.

2. Please wear appropriate cleaning gloves and eye protection
3. Ensure enough ventilation outdoor during cleaning
4. The stainless-steel cleaner & polish spray may be highly flammable, keep away from open fire. Also, leave the BBQ grill over 24 hours before firing the grill for cooking.
5. Before cooking food in the BBQ grill, wipe grill mash with water before cooking food on it.
